Lorna Simpson

Born, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York, USA

One of Lorna Simpson’s photo-text works appeared in Deborah Willis’ essay ‘Talking Back: Black Women’s Visual Liberation Through Photography’ in the catalogue for ‘Transforming the Crown’.

From the archived Documenta 11 website: www.documenta12.de//archiv/d11/data/english/index.html

“Lorna Simpson has explored innovative approaches to the medium of photography, most commonly through juxtapositions of image and text that scrutinize preconceptions about gender and race while undermining collective assumptions about photography. Simpson reveals that the self one presents to the public is a mere fiction based on misconceived expectations of the other, and a failure to recognize the value of one’s true self. But Simpson’s thesis is not presented as an obvious moral to a narrated story.”
