For years before his death, London’s October Gallery emerged as a committed advocate for Aubrey Williams’ work. This advocacy and commitment has continued in the decades following the Guyana-born artist’s death in 1990. Typical in this regard was the exhibition Aubrey Williams: Selected Works, held at October Gallery 25 June - 1 August 1998. This was the press release for the exhibition.
“The October Gallery will present an exhibition of selected works by Aubrey Williams to coincide with the first comprehensive retrospective of his work in this country to be held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery (12 June - 16 August 1998) The October Gallery has championed Williams’ work for over a decade first exhibiting his Olmec-Maya series in 1984 and more recently in 1995, for the first time in the UK, showing the Cosmos Series. This summer exhibition will be Williams’ fifth show at the October Gallery.”
