Postcard produced in relation to Aubrey Williams’ exhibition, held at the Royal Festival Hall, London, 1 November - 6 December 1984. The exhibition was titled, Shostakovich: An Exhibition of Paintings by Aubrey Williams Inspired by the Music and Life of Dimitri Shostakovich. The exhibition took place at a time when the Royal Festival Hall was under the control of the GLC (Greater London Council).
The postcard credit read, “Shostakovich, 3rd Symphony, Op 20 for Orchestra and Chorus (Poetry by Semyon Kirsanov). Painting (82 x 52 inches) by Aubrey Williams shown at an exhibition of his work at the Royal Festival Hall, November 1984. Photography: Martin Proctor”
Note. The dimensions mentioned were incorrectly ordered. Height should have preceded width, as the painting is in landscape formation. The dimensions should have been referenced as 52 x 82 inches.
The postcard was sent by Anne Walmsley, in response to a query about one of Williams’ images. Handwritten text on the postcard, as follows: “12.XI.01 Dear Eddie The slide is of Aubrey Williams’ painting Totemic Emblems IV 1988, oil on canvas, 99 x 125 cm It was reproduced on the October Gallery invitation to their show of AW Selected Oils & Recent Acrylics 2 Nov. - 16 Dec. 1989 Hope this helps.
