Catalogue for Lost Illusions: Recent Landscape Art. The exhibition featured Renee Green, Hachivi Edgar Heap of Birds, John Miller, Eleanor Bond, Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun, Jeff Wall, Rasheed Araeen, Rodney Graham, and Deborah Bright. The exhibition, at Vancouver Art Gallery was the shown 2 November - 29 December 1991.
From the catalogue essay: “Lost Illusions addresses the contentious subject of landscape. Eighteenth and nineteenth-century modes of landscape painting, whether ideal, heroic, or sublime conveyed nature as infinite, mysterious, and inviolate. Although the myth of nature as invincible and constant has persisted in art to this day, it is increasingly obvious that nature is fragile and its resources finite. Rather than being an apocalyptic accounting of the extent of the environmental crisis though, the works in this exhibition point to reasons why changes occur in the landscape, representing different readings and histories of the land.”
