Fairly confrontational review of the exhibition The Thin Black Line at the ICA. The author takes the view that the title is reference to a ‘us and them’ situation, (in reality the title refers to how a previous proposal to use all the gallery space at the ICA had been refused). Although the overall tone of the review is critical the author finds the exhibition ‘impressive’ and says of Sonia Boyce’s work “The single most effective work in the show is the one which pulls you most deeply into a young black artist’s thoughts and past. It is a drawing by Sonia Boyce called Mr. Close-friend-of-the-family pays a visit while everyone else is out. The title says it all.”
