Title: The Other Story: Afro-Asian Artists in Post-War Britain A personal commentary by Michelle Reeves and Anandi Ramamurthy.
Contains the following reproductions: Ronald Moody, Man, His Universe, 1969; Sonya Boyce, “Lay back, keep quiet and think of what made Britain so great“, 1986 (detail); Keith Piper, Go West Young Man, 1987; Mona Hatoum, Measures of Distance, 1988; Uzo Egonu, Restaurant at Bad Orb, 1980.
The guide is broken down into the following sections: Introduction; In the Citadel of Modernism; Taking the Bull by the Horns; Confronting the System: Communities of Resistance; Creative Rebellion; Recovering Cultural Metaphors. From the “Creative Rebellion“ section: “Out of the embers of stuggle rose the phoenix of creative rebellion in the form of a new body of Afro-Asian artists, many British-born and to varying degrees the product of art school environments. They challenged the system to articulate their experiences of racism, imperialism and sexism. Taking as their starting point their early experiences of loss and alienation, they sought through a dynamic synthesis of art forms to explore the complex relationship between imperialist and Black cultures. What has emerged is a powerful document which speaks of pain but also of hope for the future.
