Solo exhibition by Keith Piper, taking place during a particularly productive exhibition period for the artist. The exhibition took place at Rochdale Art Gallery, in the early 1990s, most likely either 1991 or 1992. The catalogue which accompanied the exhibition omits any reference to the exhibition’s dates. The full title of the exhibition was ‘Step Into the Arena: Notes on Black Masculinity & The Contest of Territory’. The exhibition, and its accompanying catalogue, touched on overlapping issues of how Black masculinity is constructed, with particular references to Piper’s own life and his place in the emerging Black Art(s) Movement of 1980s Britain. Other subjects examined included the Black Power movement, the Black sports person, and assorted related histories, narratives and arguments.
