Trinidadian-born writer C.L.R. James, contributed The Search for Guyanese Identity, to the publication Guyana Dreaming: The Art of Aubrey Williams, Part Three: Critical Comments on the Work of Aubrey Williams. James was the subject of a text - C.L.R. James as a Critical Theorist of Modernist Art, written by David Craven, in Cosmopolitan Modernisms, inIVA and MIT Press, 2005. A quote by James, “Those people who are in Western civilisation, who have grown up in it but yet are not completely a part, have a unique insight… and something special to contribute.” The quote opened the Introduction to the hugely important edition of Ten.8, Critical Decade, subtitled Black British Photography in the 80s, Ten 8, vol. 2, no. 3, Birmingham, 1992. The quote had previously appeared in an earlier issue of Ten.8, Vol 1 No 16.
