From the catalogue: Introduction by Stella Couloutbanis, Exhibitions Organiser, The Bonington Gallery, Kathy Fawcett, Exhibitions Officer, The City Gallery, and Sylvia Wright, Manager, The City Gallery: “There is No Redemption at the Bonington Gallery presents three artists, Ghanaian artist Godfried Donkor, South African artist Johannes Phokela, and Nottingham-based artist and exhibition curator Michael Forbes. All three artists problematise the relationship between past and present, focusing in different ways on the complex social relationships embedded in the generation, construction, and reconstruction of African and European histories. Donkor, Phokela and Forbes share a concern to re-inscribe into European history the presence of those Africans sold as commodities and then erased from the historical discourse of European Empire through its foundational racism. At The City Gallery Godfried Donkor’s and Johannes Phokela’s exhibition Origin of End examines in-depth interconnections between the work of these two key artists, both with a claim to the title of “history man“, each of whose body of work evaluates the legacy of the Enlightenment project and assesses the relationship between modernity and slavery.”
