The exhibition featured the work of Simone Alexander,  Frank Bowling, Sonia Boyce, Pogus Caesar, Denzil Forrester, Anthony Jadunath, Errol Lloyd, John Lyons, Bill Ming, Ronald Moody, Colin Nichols, Eugene Palmer, Veronica Ryan, Gregory Whyte, and Aubrey Williams. The exhibition took place at the Leicestershire Museum and Art Gallery, New Walk, Leicester 16 August - 28 September 1986, before a selection from the exhibition toured to Central Museum and Art Gallery, Northampton and Cartwright Hall, Bradford, in conjunction with ‘Double Vision - Contemporary Afro-Caribbean Art’

The exhibition was organised by Julia Nicholson and Norman Pegden, of Leicestershire Museums and took place in the wake of Ronald Moody’s death, in 1984.

From the Foreword, “Caribbean Expressions in Britain arose from discussions with Leicester’s caribbean community over what contribution Leicestershire Museums and Art Galleries could make to  Caribbean Focus 1986 - a nationwide celebration of Caribbean life and culture initiated by the Commonwealth Institutre, London - which had been taken up with great enthusiasm by leicester’s Caribbean Focus committee. Following these discussions it was decided that, among other thinf=gs,  (including a new exhibition onn the history and natural history of the Caribbean) the Museum and Art Gallery  should hold an exhibition to show the remarkable contribution of Caribbean peoples to recent cultural and artistic developments.

At the same time the Commonealth Institute  was already arranging to bring over an exhibition of sculptures and paintings by artists living and working in the Caribbean, and had offeed to tour this to Leicester. The ideal solution theefore seemed to be to tke on this exhibition - ‘CARIBBEAN ART NOW’ fromn the Commonwelath Institute and to complement it with our own exhibition which would show the contributions of artits of Caribbean origin who have worked in Britain. This complementary exhibition emerged as ‘Caribbean Expressions in Britain’.
